Coming from Chicago, I hadn’t heard some of the slangs of Michigan. It took a while to see people spell and pronounce chimney “chimley” and defend the idea that is definitely spelled that way! I had never heard of Vernors either! In Chicago, they do not have, what I now call Whoop-Dee-Whooos (when I’m giving directions, that’ll through them for a loop!) or turnabouts for heading another direction on a street. In Illinois you are just plain out of luck if you are heading the wrong direction!
And the street names were fun to learn! Schoenherr-I thought at first it was SHOW-AY-NER. Gratiot-GRAT-Y-OT.
Once I had the delightful privilege of riding up front on the sleigh ride at Greenfield Village. The driver and I spoke two sentences together and he said “You’re from Chicago aren’t you?” I couldn’t believe it! Did I really sound different than everyone in Michigan?
Now that I have lived here most of my adult life, I love Michigan and it’s characters and unique quirks. Life has been so interesting and full of life here! Enjoy our wonderful state and all its idiosyncrasies that make it special!
